Personally I plan to use ai art to fill in for the fact that I suck at it, since my game is modular and made so every piece of it is meant to be replaced by users. The art and code I have other than the skeleton is made so players can create their own versions of each module and replace them easily, hopefully as easily as replacing a Super Nintendo game cartridge. In that analogy my game is the console with a ton of different cartridges which define what is in the game, and players make their own cartridges or get them from others and take out and replace each cartridge. Pretty much all the art will be crappy, except it will be generic enough that it is playable.
It is actually important that the original art and code kind of sucks otherwise there would not be incentives for people to replace the modules.
