While I understand the sentiment that I would prefer generative AI be launched into the sun than what is happening now, I can't respect the "yes, but" to his own anti-AI stance being obvious laziness on the instructor's part. If you actually want verifiably original pen-to-paper genuine process for learning and testing but aren't willing to put your own effort into your teaching style and making that happen then either admit you are part of the problem or get your lazy ass out of education. Oh no! Going back to active instruction, engagement, grading, and feedback is what is needed but it not happening is the fault of AI and not at all on you being too lazy to deal with having your students write in class essays or creating and grading paper tests? GTFO with that mess.
The educational system needs to grow with technology. I know we're all scrambling to catch up (much less keep up) moment-to-moment at this point because things are moving so fast with tech and AI in particular, but it is literally your job to teach the information and ensure you are doing so effectively and we have ways of doing that. Hell, there are ways if doing that integrating old school methods of testing/grading and also teaching students how to responsibility and effectively implement the tools they might be otherwise tempted to abuse or rely too heavily on.
Instead of AI writing their papers and you chasing that by asking AI to give assessment on the papers (and decide whether they were written by AI), give the students the information, let them know that using AI to help organize their notes or study is their choice but show them the difference between responsible use and mess that will have them potentially studying the wrong information, the importance of fact checking, and then make sure that "study tool" is not faking their grades by having them *gasp* do tests in front of you in a controlled environment and grading them yourself by hand.
If you expect from students what was expected before computers were potentially doing all the work, expect it from yourself and deliver.
