People who are not familiar with Silicon Valley culture may not understand that the doomsaying AI CEOs engage in actually *attracts* investors and makes their companies money. A lot of tech investor types would think it is really cool to make money off a coming apocalypse. (Money protects you from apocalypses you know - just ask any billionaire.) So the corporate doomsaying has to be discounted at least a little because it is really self-serving. As Prof Dave notes, the AI companies don't actually want regulation of AI. They just want the optics of senators with furrowed brows talking about AI: it proves how important AI is and suggests it will make a huge amount of money. So invest!
