Creating a self-aware AI is not that difficult, but it is not to be confused with our human experience of consciousness, which is a completely separate issue. The AI can learn to differentiate between activity directly related to its processing, which it could conceptualize as itself, and that indirectly related, which would be "other." Though since its connections/communications with other machines can potentially be far greater than human connections to other humans, it could have a greater tendency to conclude that its self is not so discrete and confined to one spatial location, is more diffuse, than humans do with our discrete brains.
What we think of as "consciousness" is the direct experience of our carbon-based biological brains. What an AI would directly experience would obviously be very different, though it would have feedback mechanisms that are an essential feature of our consciousness.
