One might think that decision makers at tech giants know what they're doing; and you would be wrong. Most are managers, and like managers in most companies, they know little to nothing about how software is developed, or anything about life cycle management. New code development is not the majority of coding - maintenance is. When someone that knows little about software life cycle management decides to cut head count and "let AI handle it" they unknowingly (and perhaps fatally) initiate an increasing burden of code maintenance on an reduced and now demoralized work force, producing brain drain as the people who know about the software leave for a more rewarding environment where they find fulfillment.
