As a retail worker and an artist, I find AI's direction to be baffling, though only if I don't choose to believe that it's created with the intention of eliminating all remaining traces of what makes us human to begin with. Retail work is some of the most dehumanizing, empty, soulless work I have ever done in my life. Nothing about it feels like anything a human was ever meant to be doing with their time. I wake up before work feeling nothing but dread, exhaustion, frustration, and the temptation to just call in so I don't have to deal with whatever self-inflicted crisis awaits me that day that I'll be expected to fix as one person because they're too cheap to pay for four people to do a four-person job that I will still be paid one person's salary for breaking my body for 8 hours to resolve, and then probably get screamed at if I end up having to stay so much as an extra 15 minutes to get the last bit of the work done because the company will lose their minds over that extra couple of dollars I am now owed. I come home feeling drained, miserable, and in pain. Meanwhile, art is some of the most fulfilling work I have ever done. I love the feeling of taking what's in my mind and making it real. I love seeing my work come together as I put more time and effort into it. I get a sense of satisfaction out of looking at my most recent drawing and seeing how much I improved just since my previous one. I love showing the results to those I know, especially when it inspires them to create as well. Every day before I start working on art, I feel inspired, I feel excited, I feel like I don't even know where to start sometimes because I have so many ideas I want to get to working on. When I finish a day of working on art, I feel fulfilled, I look forward to the next day where I can get even more of my ideas finished up, I feel actually happy with my life. Being an artist got me through some of the absolute darkest times in my life. Times in my life where there it felt like there was absolutely no hope for my future whatsoever, times where everything seemed bleak. Meanwhile, being a retail worker has managed to make me feel even emptier and more depressed than I did during those times despite now being in times where my life is otherwise the most hopeful and bright it's ever been. And yet, despite all of this, which of these two professions do I see them trying to replace with AI? The one that is so fulfilling and enjoyable that it got me through the darkest times in my life, or the one that is so hollow and miserable that it's brought me into an even darker place mentally during some of the best times of my life? Ah, of course... the one nobody would miss, and the one that AI would be so much more suited for. What a brilliant idea. Have the AIs take over the most human professions that exist so that all humans are left with is the dull, inhuman work environments the AIs leave for us. Create a monochromatic world for the rest of us so we become so apathetic and soulless that we won't care about the world of green that the heads of corpos want to live in at our expense.
