The Turing Test was supposed to be this massive hurdle, right? Some even saw it as a definitive marker of a sentient AI, or at least something close to it. The thing is, even though on a base level it learns the same way we do, we are also still learning and evolving. We've learned to detect things such as - get this- an overuse of em dashes! And, big shocker, an overly formal or enthusiastic tone!!!! Wild, right?
Anyway, it seems the other thing we humans are really good at that machines have nowhere near mastered is being able to read through the noise. If a human cashier hears someone yell "SEVENTEEN THIRTY-EIGHT!" from the backseat, they're likely to just write it off, and maybe roll their eyes at a dead meme. A machine, on the other hand, might interpret that as a number 17 and a number 38 combo meal or 1,738 orders of fries.
The systems were designed as sponges in vacuums. Of course they're going to struggle in the real world.
