I’ve been participating in NaNoWriMo with my mom every year since I was 7 years old (with varying degrees of success lol.) Seeing the decline of the organization is just… really heartbreaking.
The AI thing in particular, while definitely less extreme than some of the other controversies they’ve been in, really irks me because… even in some nonexistent alternate reality where they were right that poor, disabled and/or nonwhite writers can’t make good work on their own, AI is still directly opposite the idea that WriMo was based on in the first place.
It’s always been about the first draft. It’s not supposed to be good or polished, heck it’s barely even supposed to be coherent. For an entire month, you’re supposed to banish the thought of quality and just write. Generative AI is the enemy of that idea.
