My favorite sci-fi movie, Forbidden Planet (1956) comes to mind. The Krell, a super intelligent species, developed a way to move matter by mental projection to any part of the planet. But they forgot the Id, a Freudian term for our deep, hidden unconscious mind, was still running the show. The desire for control and power-over, infused with greed, anger and hate was unleashed. The superego, our higher, reflective consciousness that religion sometimes represents, was overpowered. The Krell became an extinct species, crippled by their own fear and lust for power. Back on planet Earth, we now have super-rational technocrats designing AI machines who say woops, humans have a dark side. We still don't understand consciousness, but we're about to unleash powers beyond our control. We live in a driven, power oriented capitalist culture competing now for what? It's own extinction! Amazing! The genie's been out of the bottle for a long time (since the Industrial Revolution) and people just kept pushing the peddle. Like global "warming," it's exponential. It accelerates. That leads to chaos in the planets energy-entropy flux. So here's another tipping point, where the desire for rational control (AI) leads to the irrational unleashing chaotic outcomes. It's time to read Freud, Einstein (as humanist) and the Bible, before AI writes it's own books of wisdom.
