This is a common misconception. They need access to the actual code. So, for instance, Google signed a deal with Reddit to mine their numerous subreddits to gain knowledge from the hundreds of thousands of people who have privately researched countless topics and shared them on the site. Problem is Reddit is also full of nonsense, and AI can have a hard time deciphering what is credible and what isn't. Early on, it was possible to ask Google AI how many rocks should a human eat, and it responded with "2-3 a week". It can be even more confusing for AI on current affairs as different news sources will each have their own slant, perhaps given conflicting information on important events.
