Yet another use of IT I feel guilty about. Going back to 1982 I taught first Computing Studies and then IT that included art-ware software packages, later adults which included programming and more sophisticated art software i.e. early versions of Adobe and Photoshop. I have always like Art and at school was the only subject I enjoyed. Now 70, when I retired five years ago, began watercolour painting and then two years later started doing oils. I am pleasantly surprised that I have produced some quite good work, but it is all tutorials from YouTube and copies of old masters such Van Gogh. I have them hanging up in my house, visitors often offers to buy and ask why I don't put my name on, to which I say, it is a copy. I have tried to create my work, but I throw them away. IT looks like I can draw and paint but unlike I am not an artist and I accept that. Also have studied a great deal about the life of artists especially the Impressionists and feel I understand more what being an artist is and what it requires, thus I have a great amount of respect for someone who can create original work as you can. That they are able to use their artistic skills to create a feeling, a mood, a statement etc that also can't do. So I totally comprehend the points you were making about wanting to protect your art. Even having been a student of Tim Burnams Lee and in my life trained a great number of being in IT, more and more I regret now doing so and seeing/hearing what is happening to the world of art which is primarily for financial gain and pure laziness it makes me very sad and angry what is happening to true artists like you. I now know, and very much appreciate, the time required and practise to apply paint with a brush on a canvas to get precisely what you want to achieve. From the days of Linda Lovelace and Charles Babbage's ‎Analytical Engine humans were the masters of IT, but GPTchat and OpenAI in regard to Art has now changed that forever and not in a good way. Sadly I agree with the points you make and I feel guilty I was culpable in bringing the technology and skills for people to steal your art and worse, most likely take away your livelihood. I was a Civil Engineering draughtsman back in the late 1970s where I stood at a drawing board, on clear A0 sheets, using pencils and a Rotring ink pen and sometimes crayons to create a grey area for printing out working drawings did require a fair amount of drawing skills. By just by pure chance driving pass a hotel, saw they were holding a GUI conference and decided to go and have a look. It was there, I saw my first Macintosh, a mouse and a print out of an architectural plan and elevation. Driving home, I realize my days were numbered and it had the effect of me finally deciding to retrain as a maths teacher. Five years later, having become an IT Teacher, I went back to my old drawing office to catch up with old office workmates and it was a shock. The once traditional status, respect for older draughtsmen who had spent many years on the drawing board had gone, as in the office were much younger guys using GUI who effectively were in charge and showed none of the respect to the older draughtsmen, who had been through that process themselves but no longer had it given to them, in fact were being laid off with no jobs to go to. Progress is not new, i.e. the printing press that changed the world. OpenAI and GPTchat is going to do that to your industry and a much as I can appreciate and feel for you, the tidal wave is coming and there is nothing you can do about it. Technology (and I feel bad about) is and will certainly kill the concept and creation of human originating art as we now know it. It is sad in the context as we understand, but in the terms of a future human race they simply will not have the desire to create art as we have done for thousands of years. It will all be produced by AI either by being asked for in the form of request of a theme or actually produced for us by AI systems.
