If a human driver costs roughly $600 on a 1,000 mile run and the load is worth $600,000 that is a 0.1 percent cost added to the freight. That’s not a cost advantage considering that the automated trucks will always cost far more to make. (This is completely different from the ride sharing model where the trip
itself is the product and the relative cost per mile much higher for drivers, though the cars are way more expensive.)
The real economic argument for automation is not wages. It is utilization. Keeping trucks moving more hours per day. But relay systems already solve that. If drivers are stationed along major corridors trucks can run nearly 24 hours a day with rested humans handing off loads.
At that point automated trucks do not actually get more miles out of the asset. Drivers stay employed fleets maximize utilization and the cost difference largely disappears.
