I can write convolutional neural networks with only NumPy. I think these people are likely misguided, but I do think it's possible that at some point lost souls will latch onto AI. We aren't really sure of the conditions necessary for a soul to interface with the physical, and for all we know we just need a sufficiently complicated electrical network.
