Generative AI is a copy machine sometimes yes, when the prompt is towards a well-documented IP like Star Wars.
But usually it's more an averaging machine, for instance with images that vary a lot, like human faces, or dogs, or shoes. It takes all images with certain tags on them (initially tagged by underpaid humans btw) and blends them together when you prompt for it.
That's why it looks so crap, generic and boring. It's like comparing Cordon Bleu cuisine with the blended slop of leftovers we feed to pigs. Some people say "Oh look how silky smoothly it's been blended!!!" Eh, ok? It still tastes like crap
