As someone who works with AI and has set up automation, the capabilities of these models, while highly useful for specific tasks, are severely overhyped. The media (who know sweet FA about AI) just parrot information without looking into facts. The Block layoffs for instance are actually a correction from drastic over-hiring during the pandemic. They just frame the cuts as AI efficiency and look good to their board and shareholders. It’s the hype that is causing job loses as companies hold out for as long as they can to see if the tech will pay off…there’s been many cases in the US to say it isn’t paying off re: productivity and some companies (like IBM) have gone back into hiring mode.
