AI sucks and should burn in hell, but there is a core element of the other sides argument being ignored so let's address it. If you claim to be an artist, make art not prompts. This isn't a scrap-booking equivelant, it's blatant theft. But art makes money because businesses and projects need them. Money comes from selling the art, and as an artist that is a good thing. On the flip side, the business has reason to cut as many costs as possible, and an artist doing a commission for $150 vs a prompter doing a commission for $15 is going to be a major cost to consider. If most people that don't know art can't tell the difference they have no reason to pay the $150 for the real art. And businesses arent just corporate boardrooms full of souless boomers and venture nepo-babys, the majority of them are solo acts trying to desperately build a passion project from literally nothing to something that can support them and their family. The side thats being forgotten is not everyone is going to sit down and spend thousands of hours to perfect an art style for a single important need, most people are bad at stick figures and clipart. Plus the commission process is much more expensive than most people can afford willy nilly, and for the most part won't be easy to refine to what you're looking for. To those it isn't about "cheating artists" but just their best attempt to compete in the market that has those boardrooms who can spend $100,000 for a team of artists to work on even a failed project. That's the argument being missed, and thats what needs answered to convince them.
I've had a ton of bad experiences trying at first to find a commission that wasn't $300+ but wasn't some "artist" just using AI promts to steal not only art but my money. Even some which did cost that much would still use it, and some I couldn't get my money back on. I had to give up on that dream because everything was costed out with either time or money, and I didn't then or even now have the skill to do that project. For the most part, the 'Quality is lacking' argument isn't good enough for people out of the art space. Clearly people use it, and the quality is garbage. AI is awful and morally wrong to use, but having worn the other shoe it is very clear the benefits of using it to those needing the help. That's the specific point that needs argument. An alternative that isn't just "quit being lazy and pick up a pencil + paper."
