At least when a person uses someone else's work as reference, they're still putting in the work themselves and will (hopefully) credit the art they used as a reference if it ends up posted. With AI, I could just find an artist I like and with minimal effort create something identical and then call it my own. It's the difference between, say, going to a museum to study the greats vs. Photocopying from the artists artbook and calling it your own.
Studying other artists is part of BEING an artist, because it helps you develop your own style. But AI takes zero creativity and uses other people's work without having to put in the years of practice. I think AI is fine for helping brainstorm, but not for creating a mimicry of someone else's work- it's just disrespectful
