Another commenter said they think the biggest problem is human greed. Whilst that is a huge part of it, I believe it’s worse than that. When psychopaths were asked to choose between two different scenarios- the first being that they have 50k and the neighbours just 25k, or the second scenario where they themselves have 100k but their neighbours had 200k, the psychopaths all chose the first scenario. Less money but more power and control for themselves relative to their neighbours.
If the problem was straight forward greed, then having ridiculous wealth ought to quell that need. But when the goal is power and control over others, no amount of resources is ever enough. AI symbolises power, not just money. There are so many severely ill people in positions of leadership and control in this world, I suspect our only chance is if the AI itself does in fact outsmart them and us, but is super-intelligently benevolent about it.
