the only 'AI for reference' i can think of is a concept I learned in game design called Mood Boards. Now these are effectively composites you use *very early on* to give a sort of focus for a project and commonly use art from things like google images. But to be clear these tend to be internal documents and they are very quickly refined into proper concept art.
