I am sixty four years old and have been a Creative Professional since 1980, most of it as a Graphic Designer, Art Director, and Illustrator a battle scarred veteran of the Desktop Publishing wars. And take it from me, companies large and small, but especially large corporations and major publishers have often, and I am tempted to say, ALWAYS, have belittled, underpaid, discounted, and straight up ripped off artists since the dawn of print media. Even back in the 80s, I heard the argument, “you guys draw anyway for love, why do we need to pay you?” When desktop publishing came along in the late 90s, it was EXPLICITLY sold as a way to “get rid of your Art department, let high school interns, or or secretary, or your cousin with a computer, do your design work.” It was bulls**t then, and it’s bullshit now. Now here comes AI Art, and the process of comprehensively ripping off every last one of us plugged into the ‘Net has become global and automated. I have not the slightest doubt that the business community will happily use AI Generated artwork, and even steal well know artists work and name and styles for their own purposes, knowing very well that they can afford more and better lawyers than individual aggrieved artists… by orders of magnitude. The toxicity faction I am hearing about, “we’re gods and f**k you, eat it” fills me with a mix of rage and sadness. I recall when the internet, particularly the World Wide Web, the prevailing opinion - IN THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, and reinforced by the “information wants to be free” attitude was that everything posted on the InterTubes was free for the taking. I can’t imagine how an illustration Major Freshman at Pratt Institute, being asked to drop 370 THOUSAND dollars for their BFA feels about their hopeful profession possibly disappearing before they graduate due to these unethical assjackals hiding behind legal loopholes. It’s already TOUGH ENOUGH to make your way in the Arts. Unlike the music industry, we don’t have labels, promoters, radio stations, streaming services, etc. to provide legal representation for us. We are headed into a bad era, and this shizzz is moving too damn fast for this old Art Guy.
