I think it's just as unrealistic for governments to think proactively to protect against these possible side effects and deleterious outcomes from AI as it is to put a '6-month' delay in development. First...at least the govt in the US is so fractured and partisan, that any initiative by one side will automatically be opposed by the other side...they just can't help themselves. Second, too many people already wouldn't trust the govt to mow their lawns much less take control of something like AI development.
