I am absolutely willing to make the concessions that AI art is a from of art. HOWEVER, the title of 'artist' cannot be applied to the person who simply provided prompts. After an AI is trained it is the one autonomously making decisions that essentially become a black box of decisions that we can only vaguely decipher from it's training weights. That being said AI has nowhere near enough agency to be considered the artist in itself. Artistic intent is the ability to capture a moment, express an idea, or to evoke a reaction from the viewer. It IS making decisions that one COULD argue are akin to artistic intent, but they're very shallow utilitarian decisions that usually amount to a vapid piece in the end. Without the agency to have genuine author's intent it is purely mimcry, or better stated plagiarism. You can argue death of the author on an artistic piece is a valid way to view art, but I think with AI it's becoming evident that for Death of the author to apply there needs to have been authorial intent first before it can be allowed to die. Without a true author for a piece AI isn't helping anyone expand their bounds of artistic expression.
