I understand the paradox but two things seem to never be adequately discussed and its outcomes & margin. The radiology example is a nice one and illustrates a benign outcome but let's look at something less acute for human existence, Print, specifically lithography. Printed lithographic products used to be originated by teams of people at drawing boards, with pens, pencils and markers, it was then passed on to film makers and plate makers, ultimately ending up on a printing press and machine room where a product could be collated trimmed, stitched, bound and packaged. The final outcome for example could be a piece of cardboard sleeve packaging for a supermarket ready-meal. Tech hardware & software have eliminated many of these jobs but the end product, the outcome is identical however the added-value jobs have gone, the attending income tax has gone, the easily captured corporation tax from thousands of small firms has gone, the firms are gone and a few global software companies along with one tech hardware company have taken that entire accumulative margin offshore for distribution to global shareholders with zero skin in any one nation's game. There is no benefit to the end user in this example. Tech did not add value, it extracted it on a global scale for the benefit of a few people and damaged society in the process. Trades that were worthy and skills that made people proud were lost, and I know that on a quantitative basis this has no meaning, but on a qualitative social, political and human well-being level it has profound meaning. Restraining the roll-out of tech as a check against national self harm should be a political priority, we don't need AI driven surveillance tech to manage crime if crime reduces as a natural outcome for providing vale-added, purposeful lives for people from which they can derive meaning. its cheaper too because you don't have pay Palantir billions of $£'s for the privilege of monitoring a problem that was self inflicted through greed and stupidity. Maybe happy & healthy societies would need fewer MRI's also?!
