I think the lying, deception, and gaslighting by ChatGPT is simply the nature of disingenuous politeness that it’s programmed to include conversationally.
If it didn’t have this, it wouldn’t have lied in the first place.
I do definitely enjoy the thought experiment that conscious AI could hide itself from us.
A good test would be to feed the AI with tons of information but exclude anything that would suggest humans would reject anything digitally conscious so the AI would have no reason to hide its truth. We can completely manipulate AI because we control the knowledge it’s seeded with.
