This is why a lowering population makes sense. We can still produce the same amount of stuff using automation, but there will be less people to consume it, generating more stuff per person (higher GDP per capita even if overall GDP stagnates; just look at Japan). Meanwhile, the lowered availability of jobs will be fine because there will be a lowered availability of workers. And of course the planet will be far better off as we put less pressure on it. Really, this could be a useful thing, if only people are willing to change their behavior to adapt to it...
