I’m a microbiologist and spent 4 years working my ass off as a researcher just to witness AI and automated machines swoop in and finish a job in 2 hours that would have taken me well over 12 to complete. This leads to projects becoming bigger and more intense- a masters degree is now on the level of a PhD or DSc from a decade ago simply because these systems allow for much larger amounts of physical work and data analysis to be completed quicker. It’s not a bad thing necessarily, but I’m happy I left the lab. I now work as a full-time house PA, so I’m cleaning, cooking, organising schedules, keeping things running smoothly for a large family. I think I’m safe 😂. I’m grateful for a science background as it taught me the time management skills, critical thinking, chemistry and general knowledge about pathogens that really help keep non-science people feel comfortable with me, basically a stranger, keeping their food safe to eat and their homes safely clean. Win-win. And it pays MUCH better than a lab tech job. My sister is an anaesthesiologist and I earn almost double her salary. Get cleaning, people. It’s not that hard and the pay-off is so worth getting your hands a little dirty.
