I think that Alex and ChatGPT are using two very different approaches to language itself. Where Alex is using a philosophical prescriptivist approach which seeks to mutually define terms for shared use, ChatGPT, based on its wide-ranging training data, seems to 'view' terms as limited to their contextual utility. It will be impossible to pin it down as meaningfully 'believing' anything through semantic analysis, since it's programmed on a vaguely normative, colloquial linguistics.
