Your analogy of cars and OpenAI misfunctioning in the environment as a natural progression to their becoming more reliable is a bad one.
People didn't die in cars because they needed to in order for cars to get safer.
People died in cars because car manufacturers were satisfied with the amount of people who would die in unsafe cars as opposed to the money they would have to spend in order to make them safer.
The latter is the better analogy; and it's Elon's way.
