Our economy doesnt work without people earning money, and even with very few: it doesnt.
Lets say the work force right now is 170 million people.
Lets further say AI takes almost all jobs, say 99%.
Now, you only have 1.7 million people working,
which means 1.7 million people with money;
If you dont support the other 168.3 million somehow (pampered pricess or bread and water, but somehow), imagine what a small economy suffices to supply 1.7 million people with stuff. You'd let the rest of the economy die? But then you dont need as much AI / robotics any more, and this vicious cycle very quickly leads to the death of both the entire economy and the entire population.
