If an "sonscious AI" has sensors it will be able to feel pain and pleasure. Low charge?= "hungry". Missing or malfunctioning part would make it unhappy (or at least non-nominal). Even if it's entirely virtual being, it could still sense something wrong with hardware it's running on or catch a computer virus... The argument "oh well, it/we can just disable sensors and set it's happiness to 100%" can be applied to humans as well. There are substances which allow that.
