Honestly, AI isn't the devil. it's just a tool. can unethical things be done with it? MOST CERTAINLY, and stealing someone's images to put in a database w/o consent is wrong. just as it's wrong for the NSA to watch our every digital move in violation of our rights, it's wrong for someone to use a scraper and just steal a ton of images.
With that preface out of the way, what would an ETHICAL AI image gen look like? in my opinion, that would look like a model trained off images given to it WITH THE ARTIST'S CONSENT. for example, I don't post much in the name of art, but whatever I put out there online, I'm perfectly okay with it being used to train AI. I only speak for myself, and if you don't want to train an AI with your artwork, that's your choice as well. that being said, if you DO steal art, don't be surprised if it's "poisoned" and it screws up your model. but at the same time, if you see someone trying to create an ethically trained model, **don't give them a poisoned image**. that is what we call being an asshole, and just makes artists look bad, even though you're defending yourselves.
I've also gotten word, mainly by other comments in this wonderful, lively discussion, of personal use models, in which someone builds their own miniature AI image gen trained off their own art, to replicate their own art style, and I think I like the decentralized model better! like others said, it can help artists flesh out lineart better, or come up with concepts, and honestly, I wish I had a personal model to do that with, since to me, trying to get the lineart right takes all my energy, and with school shoving a pole up my ass, I rarely have time outside of Saturdays.
I HAVE personally used AI image gen, but have NOT posted it yet. I just wanted to try it out, mess with it, and get it to generate some pictures of a 1980s Chevy squarebody truck. I wouldn't post the images raw, but I would definitely use some editing to tweak the pictures, get the physics right and all that, and make a "blend" so to speak. some of it being my doing, and the groundwork laid by the AI.
So I say all that to say this. every cloud has its silver lining, there are ethical AIs out there, with every image in its database taken with consent, and **AI isn't ALL bad**.
