I’m sorry, but this isn’t an effective argument against AI—and the proof is in these very comments debating whether Hals secretly skewered the regentesses or genuinely respected the women.
In fact, the opinion of art critics has changed regarding this very question—several times in fact! The same has occurred in the assessment of the male pendant of this painting. Where once it was ‘obvious’ that Hals was conveying that one of the men was a drunken dullard—now it’s believed the sitter simply had a facial paralysis palsy. Without confirmation from the artist himself, we can’t know whether the regentesses’ loose brushstrokes were a sign of condemnation or of style.
You are right that AI cannot mimic the context of the painting. But as of yet, humans are the only creatures capable of finding meaning where there is none. In reality, how one interprets this painting says far more about the viewer than it does of the painter.
