I feel like what gets missed in the "well that's how humans learn" argument is who's doing the learning. An artist will be able to name and credit their references (like the example in this video: Wheel of Time + the author's own intentions/experiences/ideas), while an AI prompter will not be able to tell you everything that's been "referenced" in the output. That's because the machine collected everything for them - whether that's the lighting in an artwork or sentence structure in a book. It takes the act of combining little snippets of information and forming new connections in a human brain, and outsources that to a computer, which does it on such a massive scale it removes the individual's own experiences entirely.
So the person asking for a story or artwork from that computer has not "referenced" anything, it asked something else to do it.
It's not the same as an artist using something as inspiration.
