The original Luddites were protesters concerned about mechanisation being used to suppress wages and to deskill the workforce. I'm proud to be a Luddite. As a programmer, GenAI makes me mad. AI has a lot of legitimate uses, and instead of creating better simulations (weather, traffic, all kinds of services), or streamlining deliveries and reducing traffic, etc etc or even just making games more interesting, our best and brightest, when they're not trying to optimise websites for a 0.00001 rise in clickthroughs, are spending their time and energy creating unholy amalgamations of single- and double breasted waistcoats. I can think of half a dozen AI tools that would make my art better instantly. I even used to have an app (it's no longer working, GenAI seems to have killed it) that would apply certain style elements to photographs, so you could see how it looked like in a style inspired by Klimt or Cezanne or Mondrian, and that would give me inspirations of the direction I could take an image in, and the brushes and colour palette I might choose. I'd love to have that back.
