AI's are universal function approximators. Whatever a consciousness is, AI will approximate it if we train it to do that.
Eventually becoming indistinguishable from any other consciousness function other than it running on chips instead of on meat.
We will know when AI is conscious when it passes the unit tests.
IMO the only thing that matters is that for the same inputs we receive the same outputs, it doesn't really matter if the AI consciousness function is not the exact same as the one we use so long as for the exact inputs we receive the same outputs.
