It simply will keep the plane level and pointed at a heading. Newer ones can follow a GPS flight path or a VOR bearing. Even newer ones will descend and ascend according to a flight plan. Auto land is not auto pilot, that’s why it has a different name. B) Every airplane auto pilot will run into anything if it is in the way. There is absolutely no knowledge of other things in the world. It has no cameras, no LiDAR, no radar. ADSB and TCAS are separate systems that will tell a human pilot that there are other planes nearby and their closing rate of speed. 2022: there are currently no auto pilots that can use that information to avoid hitting anything. Terrain warning systems, again, a separate system, will tell a human that they are getting close to the ground, but the auto pilot will not try to avoid it. So, the Tesla auto pilot does a couple of magnitudes more than Airplane auto pilots has ever done. Therefore using his logic, we should never have been using the word auto pilot ever, for anything. Or, remember that the auto pilot definition has, always, required a pilot to watch over it. In aerospace and in ground transportation, you are not allowed to drive or pilot any vehicle as a child; you are required to know all of the laws to attain a license, to continue your education in this field, to understand the laws of physics as much as required to operate in the real world, and not to have responsibility pushed onto anyone else. So for this dude to absolve the drivers when they know they are 100% responsible for the operation of the vehicle is childish. No matter how much the author of this video wants to view people as children, drivers must read the operating instructions - they are not to be absolved of their responsibility because of a completely unsubstantiated belief in what with the word “auto pilot” means. C) lastly for those systems that can absolve the driver of responsibility as a couple of cars on a couple of roads in Europe have been able to get granted that level of autonomy, we use different words for that capability, “autonomy”, and the contract and their approval say the driver is not responsible. In flight we do have autonomous vehicles which we have now nicknamed drones. So we have never used auto pilot to mean the person operating the vehicle does not have to be responsible or paying attention. But the video author is clever, he leaves in “big words “and casually related technical data and formulas to make his arguments sounds less fallacious.
