AI will never be conscious. It might appear to be by our perception, but it's still just very complex algorithms written by very intelligent people, designed to appear that way. It's easy for us to anthropomorphise, and subsequently empathise. Never forget that however "intelligent" it appears, it's still artificial. To those who could consider a machine conscious, I quote Arthur C. Clarke: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
