Maybe admitting something embarrassing here: I am a software developer. When I first came across LLM I tried to gauge whether there is indeed consciousness by ‚talking to‘ the LLM. The more it tried to convince me it does not have consciousness, the more I was doubting the premise it does not have consciousness. Talking to them makes you feel like they have consciousness.
It took learning of how transformer models work to eliminate any doubts, they do not have consciousness.
If this happens to me as a software developer, how magical must LLMs seem to someone without that knowledge?
