I don't think (most) are faking it either. Some are certainly lying for clickbait. I think the majority are truly just that ignorant with a dash of hubris thrown in for good measure. They don't understand how an LLM works and can't even recognize that they have instructed the LLM to roleplay being sentient but they also think they have accomplished what the people who created the LLM model could not.
