We are at an inflection point of technology - those that embrace it will thrive and those that fight it will be considered the new boomers. AI doesn't steal work, it consumes it incredibly efficiently. The output of the AI is so great that it can mimic the idea of stealing but it hasn't directly stolen. I think we need to re-evaluate intellectual property from a value perspective. Every music note has been played before, every two notes in sequence has been placed before and if you keep going down that route, when do you ring fence individuality and 'value' that is tied to a single individual or corporate body? What are we fighting for? If an incredible artist draws Micky Mouse very accurately, have they stolen it? Disney own the IP to Micky Mouse.. thefts of style or 'copying' is currently only a problem if there are profit involved, which the original IP holder feels they should obtain some, or all of the profits.. so it comes back to a value discussion, how much does inspiration or copying matter if we detach monetary value from it? Does AI profit from leveraging other peoples data? Not directly, but it does make the product more useful to consumers of AI, which then puts the emphasis on demand of service... if copying other peoples work and data is in such high demand from the consumers of AI, then is that not a societal issue around how consumers choose to express and value world data and IP? To me, that falls in the flattery camp. The discussions around obtaining profit towards the original creators is one of capitalism and trying to get a cut of an inevitable technology that is clearly the next step for humanity. Change the narrative away from 'stealing' and towards recognition. Did you see how many people have no idea what Studio Ghibli was until AI shot the searched through the roof and put the incredible studio on so many more peoples radar, that's great, visibility, exposure and celebration for the original creators.. not money, don't make this about greed.
