The most ableist BS is when abled people try to decide what disabled people need most.
We can’t even get adequate public spaces that are inclusive for us, we have so many blind spots in our society, generative art AI is not at the top of our priorities. Some of us can’t even think about art because we’re struggling just to get out of bed and eat every day. I didn’t even realize how inaccessible things are in society until I personally started losing my mobility in a way that I had to make hard decisions about engaging in society. It was only then that I realized how naive & blind I was, though I always “cared” and tried to be “inclusive.”
As someone who also has ADHD, severe brain fog & chronic fatigue, from autoimmune disease, I have thought about SOME of the potential AI helping with accessibility. The key issue is that this is coming from my own experience & personal insights. I am not trying to step out of my experiences to claim I know what others need. I am not an artist, I won’t provide opinions about areas where AI can potentially be ASSISTIVE while remaining ethical. But as a PsyD, who CAN do my own work but struggles with things that come very easily for others, I have some thoughts on ways that it can be assistive in professional writing. Ultimately, anyone who uses AI still needs a foundational knowledge and experience, otherwise it does become plagiarism.
For myself, if I am having a hard time stringing my words together & finalizing my own writing, I can see a benefit of having an AI ASSIST me with getting the rest of the way. However, I would never directly take someone else’s ideas & professional insights and then pass them on as MY OWN original work. There is a huge difference between these two things. Accessibility allows those of us with challenges via scaffolding & assistance, but a disabled person has their own very original knowledge, experiences, & ideas. We can then take those things & turn them into anything, whether it’s stories, visual art, or academic writing.
Ultimately, the limits & actual use of “AI” in society for the actual purpose of improving accessibility is a discussion that should be lead BY DISABLED people. Even within disability communities we will have a wide range of opinions but at least we’re coming from a place of lived experience.
When you don’t even bother to talk with a single disabled person, but claim “ableism” when anyone has valid concerns about AI, it actually demonstrates YOUR ableism. We simply cannot possibly understand what OTHERS need without first listening & talking to them. Using disabled people as an excuse for unethical behavior is ableism.
It’s going to take time for society to sort out what AI is & how we can all use it, it’s okay to have different opinions. But the fact people have a problem with simply admitting when they use AI (credit the sources), speaks more about themselves. Anything they say after that is just rationalizing, blaming, & denial (among other things).
