ChatGPT may just be a generative AI that's been trained on the compendium of human knowledge, but I submit to you, when does a complex, incomprehensible system of meaning encoded in vast networks of multidimensional vectors become consciousness? If an AI can train itself to encode meaning in these vectors, is it such a leap that it can also figure out how to encode consciousness in these vectors? If it's not possible to encode this, is it also possible that we are not truly conscious, and we've merely fooled ourselves into thinking we're conscious, much like one of these AI might be capable of doing? A lot to think about on a Tuesday.
