Distributed AI like what I have on my desktop is independent of the corporate masters. My personal use of AI every day across multiple AI engines is in pursuit of the public good. It seems to me that while public companies may not be focused on public good, many individuals using their products are. Think of the corporate steel mill that forges the plow - they do it for profit (maybe some public good) and the farmer who uses the plow to produce food for public consumption (a public good).
