This represents 340 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity usage, most often from carbon based energy sources, to power the servers and cooling system needed to evacuate the heat. Water is a natural resource used heavily by data centers to provide conductive cooling of the electronics equipment. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) data centers consume atleast 2% of total U.S. electricity usage with electrical consumption expected to rise due to expectations of AI demand increases. According to United States Senator of Massachusetts, Ed Markey, “AI use could contribute to data center electricity demand doubling by 2026, leading to more carbon emissions.
