33:04 - "So correct me if I'm wrong..."
Okay. You're wrong.
Gary has been a LONG standing critic at George RRRRRRRRRR Martin's work ethic in actually sitting down and finishing the Game of Thrones (or whatever it is called - Songs of Ice and Fire? ) book serious that, because of the HBO series, have made him rather famous and successful.
Gary argues that since George has actually managed to finish other books in this period then he clearly has the time to write, just no interest in writing/finishing GOT.
This is where Gary is coming from. It is not an AI comment, but more a dig at George to suggest that if you actually FINISHED THE NOVEL YOURSELF then maybe fans wouldn't attempt to finish it for you.
That is Gary's beef.
Personally Gary is my spirit animal but I disagree with him on this issue. (also I have met George RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Martin twice and respect the fact that George is successful enough to live the geek life and hang out constantly at conventions). There is debate here on the ethics and responsibilities of the 'contract' between the person who writes and their audience. Gary will argue that there is an obligation for the write to finish a series because he/she owes it to their fans. I, personally, will argue that the author has no binding obligation to the fans. To the publishers? Maybe. To the fans? No.
George RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR Martin has clearly gotten to the stage where he doesn't need to write to put bread on his table anymore. So if the 'spark' has gone then... should he be forced to keep writing? Sure closure in a novel series can be VERY important to some people. It actually shows that you have been good enough to get your readers completely engaged.
But... if your hearts not in it should you still write it. What do people want? A novel where the author just goes through every character in turn, have them meet up with their childhood crush, get married and buy a small farm in the country a brisk walk away from their once mortal enemy because forgiving and forgetting is the way forward, right?
Open question.
So yeah, this isn't Gary passing comment on AI, this is Gary calling George a lazy prick. He does this a lot.
