I think the cause of all this drama is partly the fault of the artist themselves and their misunderstanding of how copyrights work. Surely everyone is aware of the drama surrounding the Primagen/Protogen and their artist. They posted the Primagen creature design to reddit with the demand that nobody was permitted to make their own designs based off of their work or they would sue for copyright infringement. Later the artist posted the Protogen design as free use with limitations that only the artist could put certain design features on the design and others can't, wings, third set of ears, certain tail types, so on. Again, threatening legal action if anyone added these features to their design without paying her for permission. Someone looked up the terms of copyrighting/patenting something and those rights only apply to a specific design, not a general design itself. I can build my own mustang and so long as I don't put "Ford" anywhere on the car Ford can't do anything. People are getting tired of artist who think everything related in any way to them is their property and they have the right to ruin other's reputations over actually doing anything legally because they can't actually do anything legally. A good example, SamDoesArts has full copyrighted ownership over his characters themselves, their exact look, their names attached to their designs. However, he doesn't have ownership over his art style, or the fact that others might use his character design as a base for their own designs. I could copy one of his characters and change their hair color or hairstyle, or give them different tattoo's that will be their permanent feature on that character. And legally there is nothing SamDoesArts can do to stop me from continuing to create and sell this new character based off of his works. This isn't copyright infringement, nor is it theft. I would be using his work to create my own copyrightable character in his style with my own hands. And artist do this all the time, just look at all the people out there selling artworks in the style of Disney, or Warner Brothers, or Don Bluth. A.I. art can take images from artist posted online and use them to create art legally, so long as it (and the person using it) isn't recreating you characters exactly in an attempt to profit from your character design. A big part of why everyone is scared of A.I. art overall is the fact that people can use it to not have to play the artist themselves to generate a 'close enough' image that they want in the artist style. It's not that fact that people are using your images to program a computer without your permission, it's that every image it makes is an image you're not getting paid for. But in this day-and-age where everyone is struggling to survive, A.I. art is a cheap and sometimes free way to make art that you would like to have as opposed to asking an artist that charges a months' worth of gas or more for a single character without a background or anything, that may not even be able to do the artwork in the first place due to lack of want or preexisting commissions. There are artist I know of that are asking $350 per character, just for the character render alone. $400 for the character with a simple background, $500+ for the character and a detailed simple background. I don't have that kind of money for an art piece, but I do have a few hours and a few dozen lines of text to generate something close enough to what I want to be happy with it, and it didn't cost me anything. I do draw traditionally, and am smart enough to NOT post my art online, because I know the most basic truth there is about the internet, "Once it's on the internet, it's there forever."
