the reasons why facial recognition software has such issues with recognizing black people is multi casual.
1.Cameras can not differentiate between a lot of dark colors, therefore the algorithm doing the recognizing has a hard time seeing where the hairline start, seeing shadows, which make it possible to identify facial features or measure them. Furthermore, due to the fact that most people with dark skin have dark hair there is less contrast or almost none at all between their hair and skin further complicating the recognition of their faces.
2. The databases on which many of those AI driven algorithms where trained on has properly less faces of black people in them. Therefore training them less on these.
edit: I therefore assume that this is less of a issue of inherent racism then technological problems and companies focusing on white and / or Asian people since their market chair in consumer or lawinforcment market is bigger.
