I'm not sure if I agree with Ryan's conclusion that it's a cost saving measument. Musk is famous for his elimination filosophy. He's also practicing it with his rocket company and they try to eleminate as much as possible in order to be ultra-efficient. Obviously that comes down to cost saving, but cost saving perse isn't a bad thing. Problem here is that we seem to be the lab rats to teach his AI how to drive. I'm sure they will fix this thing in the AI software so that it will recognize bikes in the dark better. Meanwhile, it is a fact that a lot of bikes are not very visible in the dark. Years ago I had a '97 BMW RT and when I was riding behind another RT at night, I was shocked to see that the rear light was more a glowing nail than a proper light. If that's all you could see of this big bike, it is asking for accidents. Then I applied ScotchLite Black to the rear parts of the side and topcase and some to the side. I continued to do so on every other bike I owned. When you drive behind me in the dark, your headlight will light my bike up like a christmas tree. With that I'm not trying to say it's people's own fault that they're overlooked at night. No, everybody should pay attention and even with the worst light, it's possible to see a bike. What I do, is trying to be seen very clearly from a distance as well. If you say you didn't see me, you're legally blind. But there's also another thing that I can't figure out. When you ride at night and a car aproaches you from behind, you should see it coming in your mirrors? You should also see the light when it's closing. So three fails for this accident: the autopilot doesn't see it, the driver in the car fails to see it and the biker doesn't notice a car aprouching. But in the end the driver is responsible, since autopilot clearly states that you need to pay attention. But for our sake, autopilot should be updated. Maybe indeed with Lidar.
