We live in the very worst time for this technology to come to the fore. Billionaires with no conscience provide platforms for misinformation to propagate and despots the world over wring their hands. We hand over our every waking thought to them in the name of convenience. And where AI's have agency, they work on behalf of their masters.
One of the fundamentals of the Drake equation is how long intelligent life can last. There's a theory that it lasts as long as its ability to destroy itself evolves in parallel with its ability to control that destruction. Agentic AI whose motivation includes self preservation will inevitably evolve to destroy any existential threat. We are that existential threat.
The Bomb was, and is, phenomenally expensive and possessed by few. AI has arguably greater destructive potential and is free and in the hands of everyone.
