"but ai just does what real artists do and uses references and inspiration" untrue. even if purely mechanically speaking, the processes are different. but if we ignore that detail, and focus on the core concept, then sure you can say that PURELY MECHNICALLY it's the same thing. but what ai is doing is systematic and devoid of any respect and emotion. it's going through a purely logical process for no reason other than its creator/user thinking something looks good and wanting a machine to copy it. that's not inspiration, that's plagiarism. inspiration is when you incorporate and adapt features of or emulate others' works in your own. and the important part is that its a WORK, not a sloppy copy. when you study and put in effort, you show respect to the works you admire. but when you seek to make a copy quick and easy for cheap self gratification or monetary gain, it's worthless. that's why fake copies of famous paintings are looked down upon and people don't like it when someone tries to fool them with one even though it's not considered bad at all to copy paintings in general like people do with bob ross's art. and honestly, even those bootleg paintings are better than ai art. the artist behind them at the very least put in effort to learn how to make a convincing copy, and that takes a lot of skill. ai prompters NOT ARTISTS are just lazy, and instead use a machine that won't fool or impress anyone unless the person looking at it is extremely shallow has really low standards.
